Since 1992, this community service has been offered to individuals coping with pain and other distressing symptoms related to a life threatening illness; their family caregivers; Health Care Professionals in the Community or Long Term Care Facilities, funded by the Ministry of Health Long Term Care Division.
Through the program, access is provided to Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultants/Resource Nurses, who in turn, may provide consultation, education, mentorship and linkages to palliative care resources across the continuum of care.

The role of the Palliative Care Resource Nurse:
- To assist service providers in the application of the Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care, assessment tools and best practice guidelines
- To offer consultation to service providers in-person, by telephone, by video-conference or through e-mail regarding care, e.g. assessment and management of pain and other symptoms
- To provides case-based education and mentoring for service providers
- To help build capacity amongst front line service providers in the delivery of palliative care
- To link providers with specialized hospice palliative care resources

Conferences:
Three conferences will be offered annually in regional locations.
Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Course:
An 8 week course suitable for all disciplines of health-care providers. Consisting of 24 hours class time, 6 hours of homework and mandatory attendance at all classes is required to obtain certificate.
CAPCE:
This 7 month program, for RNs and RPNs, will take place from September through to April, commencing in 2009.
AHPCE:
An advanced palliative care course for all non-registered providers. It is planned to offer this course in our area commencing in 2010. Watch for further details.
Other:
Various additional educational opportunities will be offered throughout the year.

A palliative care library and other resources are available at our office, for the use of all providers. We have many books, dvd's, videos and journals.
Please feel free to call in to our office and make use of these materials. If you are looking for a specific resource, please call our office first to enquire whether we have it.
Please note, our office is not currently staffed full-time, so if you are planning to visit the office, it may be advisable to call first to ensure someone is there.
